The Knock Wasn’t the Problem. The Answer Was.
Name's Archangel.
I watch the perimeter.
Ain't complicated, boss.
Internet comes knockin' all day long.
Scanners.
Bots.
Researchers.
Folks lookin' for old firewalls, weak passwords, forgotten services, whatever somebody left hangin' out where it ought not be.
Whole lotta noise out there.
Most of it don't mean a damn thing.
So I don't call.
That's important.
Anybody can build somethin' that screams every time a packet brushes the wall.
That ain't security.
That's a nervous condition.
Me?
I wait.
Watch who came callin'.
Watch what they tried.
Watch whether anything inside answered back.
'Cause that's where the hand changes.
A knock ain't the same as an open door
Now see, somebody walks up to your front door in the middle of the day.
Tries the handle.
Locked.
They move on.
Fine.
Write it down.
Remember the face.
Maybe they come back tomorrow.
That's Nora's business.
She likes history.
Me, boss man?
I'm interested in the door.
Because if that same stranger tries the handle...
and the door opens?
Well now.
We got ourselves a different conversation.
That's Archangel.
Unknown source.
Attack-class behavior.
Something inside actually responds.
That's when I call.
Not because I know they got in.
Don't put words in my mouth, boss.
An answered service ain't proof of compromise.
But the odds just moved.
And when the odds move, I ain't waitin' for breakfast.
That's the breakthrough
Before Archangel, you could know what happened.
Morning report rolls in.
There it is.
Somebody hit the perimeter.
What they tried.
Where they came from.
How often they came back.
Good information.
Useful information.
Yesterday's information.
Now suppose it happens at 10:17 in the mornin'.
Everybody's still workin'.
IT's awake.
Customer's awake.
Boss man's probably already wanderin' around askin' questions nobody invited him to ask.
That's when now starts matterin'.
Something hits the perimeter.
Something worth caring about.
I see it when it lands.
I make the call while there are still people around who can do somethin' about it.
Seconds instead of tomorrow.
That's the whole trick.
Not more detection.
Less delay.
Folks get those confused all the time.
I ain't sendin' fifty messages
Now if one visitor causes fifty alerts, I ain't sendin' Paul fifty emails.
Man asks enough questions without my help.
One incident.
One message.
That's plenty.
Rest of it goes where it belongs.
Known research scanner?
Digest.
Knocked and nobody answered?
Digest.
Unknown visitor worth watchin', but not worth interrupting lunch?
Bundle the incident.
Something attack-class hits an answering service?
Different hand.
That one gets eyes now.
Simple.
Not easy.
Simple.
IT companies ought to understand this quick
You manage twenty businesses?
Thirty?
Hundred?
You can't sit there watchin' every firewall all day, boss.
Don't matter how much coffee you own.
What you need is somebody standin' at every door who knows the difference between noise and a reason to pick up the phone.
That's me.
Utilities?
Same problem.
Different consequences.
Law enforcement?
Same.
Schools.
Manufacturing.
Agriculture.
Small business.
Folks like talkin' about cybersecurity like attackers politely wait until somebody's watching.
They don't.
So I do.
Boss man asked how fast I was
I told him:
Fast enough that the question ain't tomorrow.
That's what matters.
He asked how I knew which alerts deserved an immediate message.
I explained it.
Unknown outside source.
Attack-class detection.
Service answered.
He stared at me.
Then asked the same question from another direction.
I am told this is normal.
Ain't worried about it.
Paul likes walkin' around an answer until he finds the weak side.
Let him.
My job ain't to stop boss man askin' questions.
My job is makin' sure he's askin' 'em while the event's still warm.
That's all I do
Nora remembers who's been knockin'.
Inez comes through at night and cuts the whole thing open.
Lara watches movement inside.
Me?
I stand by the door.
Most nights, ain't nothin' worth sayin'.
Good.
I like quiet.
But when an unknown hand reaches in...
When the signature says attack...
When somethin' on your side answers back...
I don't write myself a note for tomorrow.
I call.
'Cause the difference between:
We saw it
and
We saw it in time
can be the whole damn game.
Name's Archangel.
I watch the perimeter.
And boss man?
If I call you...
Pick up.

Real-Time Perimeter Watcher, SmiteByte
Most knocks don't matter.
I call when the door answers.
